 Dahlia Pest: European Corn BorerEuropean Corn Borer (ECB) flies in Spring and again in Summer. Because they require stems to bore into once hatched, the mid spring planting of Dahlia bulbs should prevent the ECB from boring until the summer flight. Solutions: Releasing Trichogramma Ostriciae, small wasps that seek out and destroy eggs. B.t. can be sprayed either in tandem or alone. Other insecticides will work, but will harm the T. Ostriciae.  Dahlia Problem: Powdery MildewPowdery Mildew (PM) is a problem for some varieties of Dahlias. There should be no negative affects outside of the aesthetics on Dhalias; however, if vegetables susceptible to PM are nearby, it is advisable to treat all plants to help minimize spread. Planting Dahlias in Direct Sunlight with ample space for good air circulation between plants will help limit PM. PM is not caused by overhead watering. Fungicides will also work if you're not concerned with organic requirements. |
